Gentleman Smith's Quarters

In 1739 Samuel Smith, a local miller and Indian trader, received a grant of land from the William Penn family, the founders of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. To this day, 20 acres remain of the original 305 acre tract located along the Conewago Creek. The original deed, written on sheepskin with pen and ink, is preserved and on display in our dining room.

The Smith family settled into the long time project of clearing the land and building the homestead that they named the Conewago Manor Farm. The location of the house was carefully considered and then perfectly placed along the creek, an oasis in the middle of what was wilderness at the time. It is now an oasis of a different nature, but still a welcome sight at the end of a long day. We hope that you are as intrigued by the Manor and the thriving grounds as were its original owners.
